The semiconductor industry is facing several transformational global trends that are creating new challenges for economies. Rising demand for AI is stimulating global demand for advanced semiconductors, driving economic growth, while increasing geopolitical tensions, conflicting derisking and diversification strategies, export controls, and regulations are complicating the business environment. Both the EU and ASEAN are trying to navigate this new landscape by capturing key nodes in the supply chain. While their positions are different, the EU and ASEAN countries can find synergies to develop the sector. As EU companies seek to diversify their supply chains, ASEAN is becoming important as a production hub as well as a source of skilled workforce and an engine for innovation.
This project aims to map opportunities for increased cooperation between the EU and ASEAN in the semiconductor industry. It will analyze complementarities and dependencies, identifying which cooperation modalities can contribute to each side. The resulting evidence base will inform policymakers and stakeholders seeking targeted measures to bolster resilient and mutually beneficial semiconductor ties.
