The Human Rights & Law Program focuses on the study of human rights and legal issues in the Indo-Pacific region and Europe’s approaches to them.
Through research on selected human rights topics from both comparative and case study perspectives, and by employing a mixed-methods approach that includes advanced survey data analysis, document and media analysis, and in-depth interviews, the program contributes to broader discussions on human rights in Asia and provides valuable background material for advocacy efforts. Examples include studies on Myanmar’s post-coup human rights crisis, the evolving asylum landscape in Taiwan, and other regional cases that highlight structural challenges and policy responses across diverse political contexts
The program also provides analysis and commentary on legal issues arising in Europe’s relations with Indo-Pacific countries. Its focus lies in understanding how various legal instruments adopted at the EU and member state levels help mitigate legal risks posed by China and other authoritarian regimes. Additionally, it examines questions of normative convergence between Europe and Asia, as well as issues related to lawfare.
